Roasté instant coffee pouch showing ingredients

In India, "filter coffee" usually means South Indian filter coffee — finely ground coffee (often blended with chicory) percolated through a metal filter to make a strong decoction, then mixed with hot milk. "Instant coffee" is brewed coffee that has been dried into soluble granules. Both can be excellent; they just solve different problems.

How each is made

Filter coffee

Ground coffee sits in the upper chamber of a filter, hot water is poured over it, and a thick decoction drips into the bottom chamber over 15–30 minutes. The decoction is mixed with hot milk and sugar.

Instant coffee

Coffee is brewed at industrial scale and then dried — commonly by spray-drying or freeze-drying — into granules or powder that dissolve instantly in hot or cold liquid.

What about caffeine?

Caffeine depends on how much coffee you use and the bean type, not just the format. As a rough guide, a teaspoon of instant coffee (about 2 g) gives a moderate amount of caffeine, often less than a strong filter decoction. If you are sensitive to caffeine or pregnant, check guidance from your doctor.

Which should you choose?

Frequently asked questions

Is instant coffee as strong as filter coffee?

You control the strength with how much you add. A typical teaspoon of instant coffee is milder than a strong filter decoction, but you can add more to suit your taste.

Can I use instant coffee in South Indian-style coffee?

Yes. Dissolve it in a little hot water for a quick decoction substitute, then add hot milk and sugar.
